In September in 1942 at age 30 she went to night school at the University of Texas to become a welder for th Brown Co, in Houston. The worked at the ship yards in Houson building ships for the war effort. She made $1.10 an hour.
in 1945 she went to beauty school and lived in Houston and lived next to Uncle Gene and Aunt Zula in 1946. She returned to Austin in 1946 and got married there in 1948.
Merritt and Edith started first grade together and walked together to the school from their home.
